London Fashion Week: Kein exotisches Leder – A Personal Journey Towards Ethical Fashion
Hey fashion friends! So, London Fashion Week, right? It's huge. Always buzzing with energy, the latest trends, and…well, sometimes some seriously questionable choices. This year, I made it my mission to really focus on sustainable fashion and specifically, avoiding exotic leathers. Let me tell you, it was an adventure.
I’ve always loved fashion. Seriously, obsessed. My closet? Let's just say it's…eclectic. I used to think more was more. Bigger, bolder, more…everything. And that often meant ignoring where my clothes actually came from. I’ll admit it; I've totally fallen for the allure of a gorgeous handbag made from snakeskin or crocodile. Sigh. Beautiful, yes. Ethical? Definitely not always.

My "Aha!" Moment with Exotic Leathers

One year, I bought this stunning pair of boots. Seriously stunning. Made from what the shop assistant described as “genuine snakeskin”. I felt…powerful. Fancy. Until I started reading more about the environmental impact of exotic leather. The truth hit me like a ton of bricks. The cruelty, the environmental destruction…it was awful. I felt sick to my stomach. I still have those boots, actually, and I rarely wear them. They’re a constant reminder of my past mistakes. A heavy reminder of a past self.
That was my turning point. I started researching ethical fashion brands, sustainable materials, and the whole shebang. It's been a learning curve, lemme tell you!

Navigating London Fashion Week Ethically

This year, LFW was different. Armed with my newfound knowledge, I went in with a plan. I wanted to see what the ethical fashion scene looked like up close.
First things first: I looked up brands beforehand. Many designers are now clearly labeling their commitment to sustainability and responsible sourcing. I checked their websites – looking for things like certifications (like GOTS for organic cotton or B Corp status). It wasn't always easy; some brands were a bit vague.
I also looked for vegan leather alternatives. There are so many fantastic options out there now – from mushroom leather to pineapple leather! I mean, who knew? They're not only more ethical, but they often look and feel amazing.
I found myself drawn to presentations showcasing recycled fabrics and innovative techniques that minimized waste. Seeing designers actively prioritize circularity within their designs was incredible.

My LFW Learnings & Tips for Ethical Fashion Shoppers

It wasn't perfect. There were still plenty of collections that left me feeling…meh. But seeing that commitment to ethical production from so many brands was inspiring.
Here are my top tips for navigating fashion week – or shopping ethically in general – yourself:
- Do your research: Look into the brands before you buy. Check their websites for information on sustainability.
- Look for certifications: Brands with certifications show a real commitment to ethical practices.
- Embrace alternatives: Explore vegan leather and other eco-friendly materials. They are seriously improving.
- Ask questions: Don't be afraid to contact brands directly and ask about their sourcing and manufacturing processes.
- Support ethical brands: Your spending habits make a difference. Vote with your wallet!
London Fashion Week is more than just clothes; it’s a reflection of our values. And for me, it's a huge reminder that looking good doesn't have to come at the cost of the planet, or animals. It’s totally possible to have style and ethics! This year, my LFW experience was less about the bling and more about making a conscious, ethical choice – and that felt amazing. It felt…powerful, in a really good way. Let's ditch the exotic leathers, guys. Our planet (and the animals!) will thank you for it.
